Harmonizing Hues, Healing the Soul

China's Symphony in Xu Beihong's Paintings:
An Introduction

A concert, The Chinese Symphony Through Xu Beihong’s Brush, is set to take place at the Shenzhen Concert Hall. This groundbreaking event will achieve, for the first time domestically, an innovative fusion of Xu Beihong’s masterpieces with the grandeur of Chinese symphonic music. Through its elegant artistic presentation and the unique charm of interweaving sound and imagery, it promises an unparalleled audio-visual feast for the public. Notably, two of the musical works will be accompanied by dynamic projections of Xu Beihong’s paintings, perfectly synchronizing the visual art with the music’s most moving moments on the grand screen. These very pieces received their world premiere at Lincoln Center in New York on October 22, 2022, where they met with resounding success. A special segment of the concert will feature Ms. Xu Fangfang, daughter of Xu Beihong, an acclaimed pianist and author. She will share personal insights into her father’s artistic life and provide an in-depth analysis of these two compositions, which were inspired by his paintings. Furthermore, anticipation builds as Ms. Xu will herself take the stage as the piano soloist for the China premiere of the third movement of Xu Beihong’s Color-Ink Paintings. The concert also offers the audience a rare opportunity to acquire a copy of the book “Xu Beihong’s Color-Ink Paintings: The Long-Lost Piano Concerto by Jiang Wenye”, published with great acclaim by Shanghai Music Publishing House in 2024. This publication not only contains the full score and a selection of color plates of Xu Beihong’s animal-themed paintings but also unveils the little-known story behind this extraordinary work. Attendees will have the chance to obtain a precious copy personally signed by the author and compiler, Ms. Xu Fangfang.
